Police arrest 27 suspected gang members

MONTREAL – Quebec police say they've hit street gangs in Montreal where it hurts.

On Wednesday, officers from various forces arrested 27 suspected gang members, mostly in the north end of the city. One was arrested in Gatineau, in West Quebec.

The suspects will face drug and gangsterism charges.

Arrest warrants have been issued for five other suspects.

During the raids, officers say, they seized drugs, weapons and police vests.

Police started investigating the gangs in 2003, after receiving numerous complaints from business owners and citizens.

They dubbed the operation "Project Abat."

Police believe 10 street gangs are operating in Montreal, with varying levels of organization.
